Shoe Creek/CrabTree Falls May 23rd, 2004
This trip did not start out as a Shoe
Creek run. The plan had been to do either Crawford Knob or Big Levels.
However, since this run was on a Sunday very few people could actually make it,
and some of those that had planned to attend were no shows. It turned out to be
just myself and Allen (I had the TJ on this trip as Jen was in VA Beach for the
weekend and the XJ is laid up waiting for the D44). We left Waffle House
at around 9am and made our way towards Crawford Knob only to find a gate up.
Since Big Levels was on the other side of Afton Mountain (meaning we would have
to go around via I64), we decided to make our way down to Shoe Creek instead.
FIrst
we had to figure out how to "get there from here". It was a good thing
that I not only had all the maps printed out, but had brought the laptop with
the TOPO maps with me as well. Plus, we both had GPS. In the
meantime, Allen got some good pics of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
So, we made our way down to Shoe Creek.
It was a good day. We even found a few new places to play just off of the
main trail...including a few that I would not take in the TJ. Then next
time we get out there I will take them in the XJ since it has more armor.
Some shots from/of the AT where we
stopped for lunch.
Finally some shots from the trip back
down the trail.
Here's a list of some of the waypoints
from the track log.
